Joseph of Arimathaea

Joseph of Arimathaea
(first century)
   Saint.
According to the Gospels, Joseph was a member of the Jewish Council, ‘a good and upright man’ who was ‘waiting for the Kingdom of God’. After Jesus’s crucifixion, having asked the Roman Governor, Pontius pilate, for permission, he buried Jesus’s body in his own tomb. No more is known of him. According to legend, he was a tin merchant who visited England in the course of business with the young Jesus. He is also said to have returned to Glastonbury after Jesus’s death with the Holy Grail. This story is the inspiration behind William blake’s famous hymn ‘Jerusalem’.
